SCHEMA THERAPY INSTITUTE MIDWEST
Because Schema Therapy works by MODE not symptom it can be used effectively with the majority of complex psychological problems including personality disorders, complex trauma and chronic mood or interpersonal problems which have not responded to other treatments.
Schema Therapy and Group Schem Therapy have established an evidence base with Borderline Personality Disorder. Group Schema Therapy has also demonstrated efficacy for BPD in a randomized controlled trial by Farrell & Shaw,2009 a pilot study by Arntz & Dickhaut, 2013 and in inpatient open trials in the US and Germany (Reiss, Lieb, Arntz, Shaw & Farrell, 2013)
A 2014 randomized controlled trial conducted by Dr. Arnoud Arntz and associates demonstrated the efficacy of ST for Avoidant personality disorder and other Cluster C personality disorders.
Group Schematherapy for Borderline personality disorder is a program developed by Joan Farrell, Ph.D. and Ida Shaw, M.A. This treatment integrates psychoeducation about BPD, emotional awareness work, distress management and interpersonal skills with the Schema therapy model of Jeffrey Young, Ph.D.
GST is currently being studied at the Indiana University School of Medicine Psychiatry Department Center for BPD Treatment & Research. Currently a six month outpatient version called BASE is available at Midtown Mental Health Center, Fountain Square Clinic, with Dr. Heather Fretwell. BASE is an acronym for people with BPD Awareness, Schema Mode change & Empowerment.
Unlike skill based approaches like DBT, Schema Therapy goes beyond this foundation of symptom management to address improving overall quality of life - healthy relationships and fulfilling employment.
BASE - using group and individual Schema Therapy offers a new beginning for people who suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder!!
BPD is a treatable & recovery is possible!
