Schema Therapy: Breakthrough Treatment for Challenging Disorders and Trauma

This exciting three-day workshop presents the model and interventions of Schema Therapy (ST), a breakthrough in the treatment of challenging disorders and trauma, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). ST is a unique integrative approach to psychotherapy with roots in Cognitive Therapy, learning theory, and the research of developmental psychology. The individual ST model developed by Jeffrey Young, PhD and the Group ST (GST) model developed by Joan Farrell, PhD and Ida Shaw, MA will be presented.  ST has a growing evidence base that demonstrates significant positive effects in reducing BPD symptoms and increasing functioning and quality of life in both individual and group modalities. In addition, it is currently being tested as a treatment for Cluster C personality disorders, forensic populations, eating disorders and PTSD (including combat veterans). Individual ST is well described in Schema Therapy A Practitioners Guide by Young, Klosko & Weishaar, Guilford 2003 and GST in Group Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Step by Step Treatment Manual with Patient Workbook, by Farrell & Shaw, Wiley, 2012 (available for purchase at the training or from www.wiley.com)

The workshop combines didactic presentation, trainer demonstrations, video of group interventions and opportunities for participants to experience and practice individual ST via experiential exercises and imagery work and GST in role-play groups.  From attending the workshop participants will understand the basic interventions of the ST model, their adaptation for use in GST and the evidence base for ST. Handouts, group exercises and homework forms to use with patients will be provided.

Day one presents the theoretical model and core interventions of individual ST for a variety of psychological/psychiatric problems including BPD and other personality disorders. Day two continues to demonstrate the core interventions of ST and broadens to include their adaptation for a group. Video presentation of the trainers leading a group will be shown to illustrate the interventions.  Day three focuses on role-play practice of techniques and additional trainer demonstrations in which participants play patients. The workshop qualifies for 18 credit hours toward international certification in Schema Therapy from the International Society of Schema Therapy. This is the first workshop in an organized curriculum for ST and GST that leads to certification in ST by the ISST.
